Effective project management often requires detailed tracking of task dependencies and the identification of critical paths. KTern offers robust tools to manage these aspects seamlessly. This documentation focuses on handling dependencies and determining the critical path in KTern.
Dependencies
1. Adding Dependencies
- To add dependencies to a task, navigate to the task and click on the dependencies section.
- Select the desired task to add a dependency.
- You will notice an automatic change in the date according to the dependency you add.
2. Types of Dependencies
- Finish-to-Start (FS): Task 1 must finish before Task 2 can start (e.g., 1.1.1FS).
- Start-to-Start (SS): Task 1 and Task 2 must start at the same time (e.g., 1.1.1SS).
- Finish-to-Finish (FF): Task 1 and Task 2 must finish at the same time (e.g., 1.1.1FF).
- Start-to-Finish (SF): Task 2 cannot finish until Task 1 starts (e.g., 1.1.1SF).
3. Adding Multiple Dependencies
- Add multiple dependencies to a task by separating them with commas (e.g., 1.1.1SS,1.1.2FS).
4. Lead and Lag Time
- Lead: Time advanced for a successor activity (e.g., 1.1.1FS-1).
- Lag: Time delayed for a successor activity (e.g., 1.1.1FS+1).
5. Visualizing Dependencies
- Use the Gantt View to visually represent dependencies among tasks.
- Apply filters such as Day, Week, Quarter, and Year for enhanced visibility.
Identifying the Critical Path
1. Understanding Critical Path
- The critical path includes tasks that are at risk and crucial for meeting the project deadline.
- Identifying these tasks helps in prioritizing and managing them effectively.
2. Setting Dependencies for Critical Path [METHOD 1]
- Add dependencies in a chain-link format, starting with the task nearest to the project deadline.
- This highlights tasks that need immediate attention and are crucial for project completion.
3. Manual Date Updates [METHOD 2]
- Alternatively, manually update the dates for tasks or work packages to indicate those nearing the project deadline.
- This helps in identifying the critical path without adding dependencies.
4. Visual Indicators
- Tasks on the critical path are highlighted with a red bar.
- Compare Planned vs Actual progress with planned progress in blue and actual progress in yellow for a clear view.
5. Critical Path Button
- Click the "Critical Path" button to see tasks and phases at risk, ensuring timely intervention.
- Example Scenario
- If Task B needs to be completed before Task A can start, add Task B's WBS to Task A's dependency column.
- After saving, a lined arrow mark indicates the dependency from Task B to Task A, enhancing task management.
By effectively utilizing KTern's simulation tools and dependency management features, you can enhance your project management efficiency. Regularly monitoring the critical path and adjusting dependencies ensures that your project stays on track and meets its deadlines.
